Purchase Internet Domain NameWhen you purchase internet domain names, you must select a name. The domain name you choose depends on your purpose. If you are building a personal page, simply use your name (if you still can). A business might use the business name or the name of the primary product.Of course, selection of a name is dependent on availability. The following Domain registration has an option called Web Site Creator (for people who don't want to learn HTML). We even have E-Commerce. This can be done at Don't select competitor domain names. If they have trademarks, you could lose the name after spending time and money making it succeed. You might even want to trademark domain names of your own. If you make your own web site for profit, you could just pick a name. Instead, I would suggest taking the time to do some keyword marketing. This process can really pay off if you do it before registering domain names. To follow this process, check out our section on Marketing Keywords. The process is simple and easy to follow. Take the time to really do it right, and you may see web site traffic from people just typing in your domain name. You want the purchase of your domain name to be simple. Purchase internet domain names similar to your domain name and make sure everybody thinks of you when they hear your name, not your competitor domains. What is a Domain Name?As you surf the internet, you look at domains. You might even want to purchase internet domain names of your own. What are domains exactly? Many people use the buzz words, but don't know what they mean and are afraid to ask.Back in the olden days (a few years ago), the internet began as a few machines networked together. Each machine was assigned a number. This wasn't too bad because there weren't very many machines on the network. The current numbering system limits the number of computers to about 4 billion. At this rate, this naming convention could get tough. It's like trying to memorize phone numbers. better than numbers Wouldn't it be great if each number was replaced with a name? Well, that's what domains are all about. Humans remember the names of sites while the computers translate those names into the numbers they love so much. The numbers, called IP (internet protocol) addresses, are tracked through DNS (domain name service). DNS servers collectively keep track of every machine on the internet. IP addresses take the form "###.###.###.###", where each ### represents a number between 0-255. If you keep your eyes open, you'll see these numbers once in awhile. These numbers are carefully controlled. The following diagram shows the structure of a domain name. The top-level domain includes .com, .net or any of the standard country top-level domains like .us (United States) or .ca (Canada).
Top-Level Domains.com commercial.net network etc.org non-profit.edu education.mil US Military.int international.gov US GovernmentYou may occasionally see some other combined top-level domains like .co.uk which is actually a commercial site in the United Kingdom. Some other top-level names are coming on line like .biz and .info. The domain-name part could be just about anything. When registering domain names you must purchase internet domain names. As long as you keep up your annual payments, and don't infringe with a trademark domain name, the domain name can be yours for life. The domain registry allows a domain to only be registered once. The domain name you want must be available, or you can't have it. If you want it bad enough, you could buy it from the owner. The part I show as the machine name is simply a resource or machine on your domain. Typically, most people host their web page on an ISP's machine and really only have a resource pointing to their page. Most web pages start with WWW. This isn't an absolute rule. We could call it W or even MYWEBSITEAT instead. It would work. Historically, people have chosen to call theirs WWW (after World Wide Web). I would recommend using WWW as this is what people expect to find. By naming our web page the way people expect to find it, we make our web page easier to find. The resource-type is the type of page you are looking at. The http is typical for a web page. HTTP is an acronym for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. There, does that help?
HTTP, HTTPS and FTP is what makes the World Wide Web possible. GOPHER is seldom used, while TELNET tends look at UNIX resources. Most browsers are designed to handle all of them. |
