So, you want to make your own web site?

Wouldn't it be great if you could simply go to any computer and look up anything? Most "Computer Guys," like myself, once dreamed of computers networked together with links to all kinds of information. For me, the internet really is a dream come true.

The most efficient way to accomplish the World Wide Web, is to have everyone enter their own information. So, if you can make your own web site, you're helping too.

One of my earliest adventures in programming a computer required assembly code (machine language), translated into hexadecimal (base 16). Then, I had to solder diodes on a rack (in binary configuration) to program the code. That was quite awhile ago, it's so much easier now.

Over the years, I've learned many programming languages. Most have become more "user friendly." When I first saw HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), I hoped more people could make web pages. The reality is, most people still struggle with HTML.

     Like most things worthwhile, to make a good web site design, takes time, effort and some money. This web site took about 200 pages to explain the things I thought you might need to know.

Along with HTML were processes like FTP (file transfer protocol), internet web page hosting, DNS (domain name services) and other technical things to worry about. Most people have enough to do without learning to program too. Obviously, better solutions were needed.

     When I first started working on PC's (personal computers), the customer bought a bunch of parts and were expected to build their own machines. This really meant, I had to spend 7 hours a day on the phone answering the same questions over and over.

     I could have continued this process, like all the other stores did at the time. But, one day I thought, "I bet I could build the machines myself in less time than I spend talking frustrated customers through the process." Besides, they only have to do it once, and we all know, the first time is the most difficult.

     This turned out to be a worthwhile innovation. Building the PC's myself only took about 2-3 hours a day, then I spent only an hour a day on the phone answering questions. A savings of 3 hours a day! We also became the #1 store in our national chain (70 stores).

Not only did it save me time, but customer's were much happier too!

The same methods can be used here. If you ask me "how do I make my own web page," then I'd prefer to present you with methods you can understand. I get more done and so do you. Besides, the internet ends up with better information, that we can all look up.

So, how does this help you make your own web site? Well, we start with a large list of tasks and separate them into 3 groups. Things you should do yourself, things you need better tools to handle and things you should have someone do for you.

Webpages have layers too. You could write a story, design HTML code, make web graphics, purchase an internet domain name, setup good internet web page hosting, make a good webpage layout, increase search engine traffic and convert those visitors into income.

Each of these items are a layer when you make your own web site. You can pick and choose the layers you want to spend the most time and/or money on.

Each layer uses different tools.
The better the tools,
the better the webpage.

There are many ways to make your own web site. You first need to ask yourself,

"what do I really want to accomplish with my web page?"

     So, do you want to make money with your web page, advertise a cause, educate the public, make a personal web site, or do you simply want to say "look Mom, I can make my own web page?"

     Ultimately, many of your decisions involve the expenditure of time and money. If you have no money, doing it yourself might be the only way. If you have money, you still need to spend it wisely.

     Doing it yourself (DIY) does have one main advantage.

Nobody cares about your business as much as you do!

You have a better vision of your business than anyone else. When you have a vision of how you want to make your own web page, it must be translated to anyone who is helping to create it. It's not always easy to talk to programmers and graphic designers. Getting them to see your vision exactly as you do can become time consuming and expensive.
